About Mooncake

The traditional Mid-Autumn festival pastry; a dense, high-calorie treat.

Health Benefits of Mooncake

One can replace a meal's calories

Traditional Cantonese lotus-paste mooncake is ~421 kcal per 100g. A standard mooncake is ~180-200g, so a whole one is about 760-840 kcal - close to or beyond a full meal. Per 100g it holds about 60g carbs/sugar and 17.5g fat, from the pastry (sugar syrup + flour + oil) and the filling (lotus paste/bean paste plus plenty of sugar and oil).

Sharing and tea are the right way

Eat just an eighth to a quarter at a time (25-50g ≈ 105-210 kcal) and share with family. Pair with a strong tea (puerh, tieguanyin, green tea) to cut the richness - this keeps the festival ritual without overdoing it, and skipping mooncakes the rest of the year loses no nutrition.
