About Seasoned Dried Tofu

Pressed tofu brined in five-spice; flavourful, about 3x the protein density of silken tofu.

Health Benefits of Seasoned Dried Tofu

Savoury high-protein tofu

Five-spice dried tofu (香干) is pressed tofu brined with soy, star anise and cassia - ~15.8g protein per 100g, about 3x southern tofu. Brining gives it the five-spice flavour and a firmer, chewier bite, common as a meat stand-in on vegetarian tables.

All-purpose home cooking

Shred and stir-fry with chives, green pepper or celery for a quick rice dish. Dice into fried rice or noodles for added protein. Thin slices in a cold dish with garlic, vinegar and chili oil are fresh and appetising. Firm and non-fragile, it suits many cuts and heat levels.

Regional differences

Every region has its own: Hunan Youxian is known for a strong bean aroma; Anhui Caishiji tea-dried tofu is brined with tea leaves for a tea note; Suzhou's syrup-braised dried tofu is sweet. Check the label and prefer traditionally brined brands with fewer additives and a clean bean flavour.
