About Sour Plum Drink

A traditional cooling drink brewed mainly from smoked plums (wumei).

Health Benefits of Sour Plum Drink

Natural ingredients of a classic summer cooler

Traditional sweet-sour plum drink is ~32 kcal per 100ml (sweetened version); its sourness comes from natural organic acids (citric and malic) in wumei that help stimulate appetite. The classic recipe is wumei, hawthorn, licorice and rock sugar simmered without artificial flavour or colour - a fairly natural coolant.

Homemade vs store-bought

Homemade lets you control the sugar: about 10-15 wumei + 5-8 hawthorn slices + 3-4 licorice pieces + sugar to taste, simmered 30 minutes. Cutting the sugar gives a lower-calorie version. Bottled versions are much sweeter, up to 150-200 kcal per bottle - prefer low-sugar or homemade.
