About Pineapple
A common tropical fruit; good for sweet-sour fruit comparison.
Health Benefits of Pineapple
Contains natural bromelain
Pineapple has bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme, which is why eating it can feel slightly 'prickly'. That same enzyme is why pineapple juice is used to tenderise marinades - it breaks down proteins in meat.
Sweet-sour, juicy tropical fruit
Pineapple is ~44 kcal and 10.8g carbs per 100g - mid-range for fruit. Sweet-acid balance varies by variety: golden 'diamond' pineapple is sweet, low-acid and needs no salt-water soak; Hainan native pineapple is balanced and aromatic. Soaking cut pieces briefly in lightly salted water can cut astringency and boost perceived sweetness.
Selecting and eating
Ripe pineapple has golden-green skin, gives slightly when pressed and smells distinctly fruity. Unripe ones are astringent and hard - not for eating straight. The core is fibrous but edible; cut it out separately, slice thin and use in cold dishes or stews to reduce waste.
