About Mango

A tropical fruit; good for sweet-fruit comparison.

Health Benefits of Mango

Great source of beta-carotene/vitamin A

Mangoes are among the highest beta-carotene fruits - ~400-800µg per 100g, converted into vitamin A in the body. The more golden/deep-orange the flesh, the higher the beta-carotene usually is.

Low-ish calories for a tropical fruit

Only 35 kcal per 100g - low for tropical fruit (compare durian 147, sugar-apple 94, passionfruit 97). A medium mango (about 200g flesh) is ~70 kcal, close to an apple, fine as a daily fruit.

Eating notes

Many varieties: Taiwan Tainong is fine-grained and low-fibre (fresh eating); Thai ivory mango is thick-fleshed (slicing). A few people are allergic to urushiol-like compounds in mango skin, with itch around the mouth; if you're allergic, avoid chewing flesh near the stone.
