About guo dan pi

Hawthorn boiled with sugar and rolled thin; sugar and calories far above fresh hawthorn.

Health Benefits of guo dan pi

The hawthorn 'energy bar'

Haw flakes (果丹皮) are 321 kcal/100g, over 3x fresh hawthorn (95 kcal), mostly from added white sugar and maltose syrup. One roll ~15-20g is 50-65 kcal - seems little but it's easy to eat several. They keep some hawthorn organic acids, so sweet-sour, but essentially they're candy.

Fresh vs processed

Fresh hawthorn is packed with organic acids and digestive compounds but too sour to eat in bulk. Flakes and slices add lots of sugar to improve taste, making sugar the star. If you want the digestive benefit, stew 3-5 fresh hawthorns as a no-added-sugar tea - it works gently.
