About Luffa

A summer gourd with a silky, sweet flavour.

Health Benefits of Luffa

The slippery, sweet water king

Loofah is only 20 kcal per 100g at ~94% water. Its slipperiness comes from mucilage and polysaccharides, which also coat and soothe the digestive lining. The dried fibrous skeleton of a mature loofah (丝瓜络) is the traditional material for scrubbing baths.

Best stir-fried or in soup

Loofah with egg is a classic pairing, the gourd's sweetness lifting the egg's richness. Loofah soup, garlic-steamed loofah and loofah pot are all delicious. It oxidises and turns dark quickly, so cook right after cutting or blanch briefly in boiling water to keep the green. Cook until it turns translucent - not much longer.
