If you were born exactly on a cusp, you could check the exact moment the Sun entered the sign that year, but the fixed date table is fine for everyday use.
What is the difference between a sun, rising and moon sign?
Your sun sign is set by your Gregorian birth date — that is what this tool returns — and represents your basic character. Rising and moon signs also need your birth time and place, reflecting outer behaviour and inner emotions respectively. Those require a full birth-chart tool.
