Solar-to-Lunar FAQ

How do I find my lunar birthday?

Enter your solar (Gregorian) date of birth in the date picker, press the "Today" button or choose a specific date, and the page automatically shows the matching lunar year, month, day and zodiac animal. For example, 1 May 1990 corresponds to the 7th day of the 4th lunar month in the year gengwu.

How is a solar date converted to a lunar date?

This tool uses a lunar calendrical table method: based on each year's big/small lunar months and leap-month arrangement, it computes the exact correspondence. Enter a solar date to get the lunar year, month, day plus the ganzhi year pillar and zodiac animal. It supports the years 1900 to 2049.

Why does the lunar date drift every year for the same solar date?

The solar calendar is based on Earth's revolution around the Sun (a tropical year of about 365.24 days), while the lunar calendar follows the phases of the Moon (about 29.53 days per month). Twelve lunar months total roughly 354 days, about 11 days short of the solar year, and leap months fill the gap. So the lunar date for a fixed solar date changes each year.

What information can I get from a solar-to-lunar conversion?

Besides the lunar year, month and day, it also shows the ganzhi (heavenly stems and earthly branches) year such as jiachen, the zodiac animal, and alternate names of lunar months (e.g. zhengyue, layue). It is handy for anyone who needs traditional Chinese year reckoning or bazi calculations.
