FAQ

What does each part of the ID number mean?

An 18-digit ID number is structured as: the first 2 digits are the province code, digits 3–4 the city code, digits 5–6 the district/county code, digits 7–14 the birth date (YYYYMMDD), digits 15–17 a sequence code (odd for male, even for female), and digit 18 a checksum (0–9 or X).

How is the ID checksum calculated?

The checksum is generated from the first 17 digits by a weighted sum: each digit is multiplied by its weight (7, 9, 10, 5, 8, 4, 2, 1, 6, 3, 7, 9, 10, 5, 8, 4, 2), the sum is divided by 11 to take the remainder, and remainders 0–10 map to the check characters 1, 0, X, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

Is the result accurate and the data safe?

The parsed result is based on a built-in national administrative-division code table and correctly identifies the province and major cities. All computation runs locally in the browser and no ID number is uploaded to a server.

Is the ID region the same as the hukou location?

The first 6 digits are the administrative-division code of the hukou location when the card was issued, which may differ from the current residence or a location after hukou migration. The ID number never changes, even after a hukou move.
